Bandung Flood

A few days ago, exactly on Monday (10/24), a sudden flood engulfed Bandung. The sudden flood hit some parts of the city in the afternoon, including Jl. Dr. Djunjunan (better known as Jl. Pasteur and Jl. Pagarsih), sweeping away several cars and killing a resident. I was in school and it rained heavily, but I wouldn’t think there would be a flood. On my way home from school, the streets were full of cars and seldom moving, so I waited in school until 4 p.m. and then I went home.

I saw nothing on my way home because I was sleeping. Later at home, I heard news about the sudden flood. It was said by Bandung’s Bina Marga road agency head Iskandar Zulkarnaen that the extraordinary heavy rain unexpectedly flooded the riverbank beyond its maximum capacity. Thus, overflowing water from the Citepu River inundated Jl. Pasteur and Jl. Sukamulya.

"Because of the excessive heavy rain, the river is unable to contain the water," he said to reporters in Bandung as quoted by kompas.com.

The flash flood reportedly took the life of Ade Sudrajat (30), after he fell into the water and was swept away while trying to assist his friend escape from flooding on Jl. Setia Budi. His body was later found in a gutter.

A black Nissan had been dragged more than 200 meters along the street before being diverted by the flow of water and carried into the Citepus River. The flood also swept away a three-wheeled motorcycle, which was parked in front of a garbage dumpster on Jl. Pagarsih and a smaller red Daihatsu Charade sedan.

The mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, has apologized to the public for Monday’s flash flood. As the mayor, he said, he will be responsible upon the disaster which made up to 16 billion Rupiah loss. He will keep sought on to repairing the drainage system.

“Indeed as Bandung mayor I am responsible. The flood countermeasures keep continues on. This year, Bandung city government has fix up the drainage system in 19 roads. It shows that our yearly installments due to the limited budget,” he said.

Through his Instagram account, Kamil uttered his apologize to all Bandung citizens, and also invited us as Bandung citizens to take our part on keeping our city clean and preventing flood in the future.

What would Indonesia be in the Next Five Years?

In the next five years, I’d like to see lots of positive changes take place in my country, Indonesia. I don’t have to be a major change that leads Indonesia to be a developed country like USA or Singapore. Instead, small positive changes would give better impact than nothing, right?

In the next five years, I’d like to see a better government system and better government employees in Indonesia. Nowadays, lots of the governors and civil servants corrupt the country’s budget. It is a lot better now than 5 years ago, where the TV programs were full of the corruption news. Thus I think in 5 years I’d like to see no corruption case in Indonesia anymore.

I’d also like to see a more open-minded society and no more racist people. The country’s development is also affected by the citizens. In such wise, if we don’t have good citizens, this country won’t develop well. Indonesian citizens should be more open-minded about everything. We should be willing to hear each other opinion and not being conservative about one idea. I think now, as well as in the future, being racist is not cool. So, stop being racist and start to love our diversity.

I see that there are lots of poor families today, so I hope in the next 5 years the number of poor families will decrease, and more people will have a good quality of life, because every person in the country deserves the same rights to have a good quality of life. They should have better nutrition, in fact that many poor families today suffer from malnutrition. Many also do not have access to clean water, which oblige them to use dirty water for their everyday usage. There are many more that we, especially the governments in this case can do to help these poor families.

One of the most common social issues today is that many parents could not afford their children’s education. Hence, a lot of the country’s next generations are uneducated. I really appreciate Mr. Jokowi’s program of the free schooling that he made so that more poor children can go to school without paying the school fee. But this program has not been spread equally all over the country, only some cities have this program already. I wish in the next 5 years, this program will spread all over the country. Therefore, more children can go to school.

The last change I want to see it take place in Indonesia is a fast internet connection. The internet connection in Indonesia is considered a slow compared to other countries such as South Korea and Sweden. Today, internet is one of the most important aspects of human’s life. The internet helps us connected with someone far away, do homework or researches, play games, or just simply to post selfies on Instagram and watch your favorite youtuber on Youtube. But slow internet connection will make our activities take a long time. Slow internet connection could ruin everything; students ca get no marks because they didn’t do their homework, you could have miscommunication between you and your girlfriend or boyfriend,  or you could be undated with the latest news today.  Thus, I hope we could make Indonesia’s internet connection faster.

Changes won’t happen if there are no actions. We all have to be willing to do things that support the change. I believe that small actions could make a big difference to our lovely country, Indonesia.

Holiday Story

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog :)

How’s everybody going? I hope y’all good. I haven’t post anything yet on this blog since last month or even more. I was going on a long holiday on my semester break. It was really fun. Now I want to share my last holiday experience to you.

I went with my family using a car all along our holiday. It was kind of road trip. We started from Bandung on June 25th to our first stop, Cirebon. We stayed in Swiss-Belhotel Cirebon. After checked-in for our room, we went out to Trusmi Batik Village. There were a lot of batik stores selling nice and unique batiks. We bought some batik fabric, blouse, scarfs, and shirts. We ate seafood for our dinner. Then we headed back to our hotel and had some rest. At midnight, we all got up except my brother, and smacked him with pillows. He woke up with shock and stared at all of us for a few seconds and then laughed out loud. Yes, it was June 26th, my brother’s birthday. After gave him a ton of happy birthday wishes, we went back to sleep.

The next morning, we woke up and had our breakfast. Then we packed our stuffs and checked out from the hotel. Cirebon was pretty hot that day. We continued our road trip to Semarang, Central Java. At one point there was traffic jam, and we were stuck there for like 4 hours. Thanks to anyone who invented Waze, we could get out of that crazy traffic. We were up to Semarang at 6 p.m., and due to at that time most of the people were break fasting, the city were pretty full yet beautiful because of the buildings and vehicle lights. We went into a mall to eat, wee, and do other things for a while. Then we continued again to Salatiga, and stayed for a night there. Salatiga was a nice city, with cold weather like Bandung. We slept peacefully that night.

The warmth of sunlight woke me up that morning. Oh, I just realized there were big windows in my room. I didn’t realize it before because the night before was dark and you cannot literally see anything. I had my breakfast and also checked my phone. The signal was very rare and always low and to find a good signal, it really wasted my battery percentage. So most of the time, I put my phone on airplane mode. That time the Wi-Fi was very strong, so I didn’t waste that chance HEHE. After we packed our stuffs, we continued again to Yogyakarta, our main destination. We stayed at Tentrem Hotel, and I swore it was the best hotel I’ve ever stayed on my entire life so far. It has such a big swimming pool, Chinese restaurant, and traditional restaurant, western and also European restaurant. There were also gym, sauna, Jacuzzi, whirlpool, and board games including billiard. We were really happy to be there. Despite the heat, Yogyakarta was a nice city with amazing culture, amusing city sights, and friendly people. We visited so many places there, including the old Keraton palace. We also looked around the city to find some batik. At night, we mostly stayed in hotel to play and have some rest. Whirlpool or sauna sounds great after you had a really tiring day. So we went downstairs and enjoy the moment.

4 days and 3 nights in Yogyakarta weren’t feeling that long. Although we still wanted to stay, we had to go to the next city, Purwokerto, because my grandparents have already had waiting for our arrival. So we headed to Purwokerto from Yogyakarta. The time needed for us to reach the city was about 4 or 5 hours. We brought so many souvenirs from Yogyakarta, like t-shirts, bakpia, and other things. We arrived in Purwokerto at 8 p.m., and so we took a bath and had a rest.

We didn’t do much in Purwokerto. Only gathered with my family there and city sight-seeing was felt really fun. We stayed in my grandparents’ house for 3 nights. We went home to Bandung after 9 days we had our road trip. This trip was really fun!

But unfortunately school will start a week straight after my homecoming. So I stay at home and prepare for my new school year. I still wanted to be on holiday. 30 days straight of holiday feels only like 14 days. But I also missed my friends. I cannot wait to meet them and share my story to them. So I went back to school.

That was my holiday story. I hope you enjoy reading it. :)

Obama's Inspirational Speech

Whenever you feel down or losing your inspiration, just take a look at this Barack Obama's speech about his early life and how he got into politics. He encourages the youths to be active in the middle of the world changes. He said that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they are given an opportunity. He also said that all of the youths represent enormous potential and enormous possibility for change. At the end of his speech he said that he hope all of the audiences who are on the brink of doing extraordinary things decide the channel that talent in that energy and that imagination to figuring out how do the audiences move the process along for better history. I think this a very good speech with very inspiring quotes.

Album Review: Pharmacy

Pharmacy is my favorite Electronic Dance Music album so far. Pharmacy is the debut studio album by Swedish electronic music duo Galantis, released on 8 June 2015. This album has 13 tracks, including 3 singles, Runaway (U & I), Peanut Butter Jelly, and You, and also a promotional single, Gold Dust. The album has reached number 1 in Billboard Dance / Electronic Albums, number 45 in Billboard 200, and number 7 in Sverigetopplistan Swedish Albums. I think all songs in this album are great. I could jam to all of it all day long and replayed it for hours. Pharmacy is under license of Atlantic Recording Corporation.

You can buy the album and merchandises from Galantis here: wearegalantis.com

Happy Easter!

Easter is a festival and holiday celebrated by Christians, in order of celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Easter is celebrated after a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. Some people also called Easter as Pasch, Passover, or Resurrection Sunday.

Easter for me is not just a time for decorating eggs and eating chocolate bunny. Besides its long holiday (yeah, straight from Thursday to Sunday), Easter means a lot for me. Jesus had sacrificed His life for us. We as human beings are rightly thankful and grateful to God. Easter eggs represent a new life, and Jesus’ resurrection is expected to bring a new hope for all of us.

I hope your Easter this year is egg-celent. Happy Easter!

Singapore Study Tour

Hello!
I just came home a few weeks ago from my Singapore study tour. It was pretty fun to meet new friends there and having a pleasant experience to study there.

Departure – Saturday, February 20th 2016
I went there on February 20th 2016. I went there with my friends from 7A and Mam Mel, Mam Liani, and Mam Hartati. Our plane will take off at 9.20 am, so we have to check-in at 7.20. At 7, I have been in Husein Sastranegara Airport with some friends. By 7.20 a.m, everyone have already come to the airport. We were ready to check-in. Unfortunately, one of my friend, Valen was sick and had to go to the hospital so she can't join us to attend the study tour. Nadya also can't go with us that day. She said she will come late. So we checked-in and then waiting to board to the plane. While waiting, we played cards. There was an announcement for us to board to the plane, so we did. Our flight was Air Asia QZ365.

The flight was fun! I sat next to Alicia D, near the hallway. We landed safely in Changi International Airport at 11.56 a.m. Singaporean time. We picked up our baggage and some of my friends bought sim cards. At 1 p.m, we went to our hostel by a bus. We stayed at Anderson Junior College Dorm.

Science Center
After we got our room key, I went to my room, unpacked my clothes from by suitcase, took a rest, and charged my phone. At 2.30 p.m, we took a MRT to Jurong East. We were going to Science Center.  We had to walk from Jurong East MRT station to Science Center. It took about 15 minutes to reach Science Center. We haven't eat yet since we landed in Changi Airport. Thank God, there was a McDonald's so we could have our lunch there. After Maam Mel gave each of us a ticket, we went into the Science Center. I have ever been here before, you can read my experience here. We had such a fun experience there. We went out from the Science Center at 6 p.m, then we were given free time to spend at JCube. We had our dinner at Nando's. 1 whole chicken was enough for 7 peoples. We came back to our hostel and took a rest. Tomorrow is gonna be a great day.

Day 2 – Sunday, February 21st 2016

I woke up at 6.15 a.m. Then I took a bath and got dressed. I texted my friends whether they want to have a breakfast together downstairs. They agreed, so I went down with them. After breakfast, we were gathered with our teachers for briefing. We were ready to go, so we went to Yio Chu Kang MRT Station across the hostel. Our today’s destination was church and Universal Studio. We were heading to Bras Basah by MRT. We had to walk and used Google Maps to find the church. Finally we found the church. We got in and attend the service. After the service, we went back to Bras Basah MRT Station to go to Harbour Front MRT Station. The MRT was located inside Vivo City Mall. We took a Sentosa Express to Sentosa Resort. Yeay! We took a photo together in front of the famous Universal Globe. Mam Melina gave each of us a ticket, and since that, our adventure in Universal Studio Singapore, began.

One of the roller coasters
(of course I didn't ride it)
We ran into the entry and got in. We took so many pictures there. We started to explore every ride there. We first went into Mummy Revenge. It was an indoor roller coaster. I don’t really like roller coasters, so I decided not to get in. I walked alone around the USS, and finally I met Will and Caleb. They were sitting in a bench and holding some bags. We were very bored. So they put those bags in a locker that we rent. Then we walked around to find a childish ride with short queue (bcs most of the rides had a very long queue). Finally we found a spinning cups ride, with 5 minutes queue HEHE. We got into the ride together, and before the ride started, we opened up chips, so we could eat while in the ride. Then we got into Madagascar and Transformer 4D ride. We tried almost all childish rides. When we finally can’t find other childish rides,
we joined the others to have lunch.

At 5 p.m, I went out from the USS. Actually we had to get out at 6, but I wanted to buy some chocolates outside. So I went to Hershey’s to buy Hershey’s chocolates and Reese’s. Then I went to Garret and bought 2 packs of caramel and buttery popcorn. It was finally 6 p.m, and we went back to Vivo City mall. We had our dinner there and I bought chocolate (again) in Candy Empire. After we finished, we went back to our hostel. I had to take a good rest that night, because the next day another great day will come.

Day 3 – Monday, February 22nd 2016
Walking to the school

The alarm in my phone rang at 5 a.m. I immediately took a bath and went downstairs to have a breakfast. Some of my friends have already been downstairs. I took my breakfast and joined them. At 6, everyone had already have breakfast and was ready to go. So we walked off our hostel to Anderson Secondary School. Yes, today is our first day of school in Singapore. We will meet new friends and teachers there. It took us about 15 minutes to get to the school from the hostel. When we finally got there, we were amazed. The school was pretty big and very amazing. School started at 7 a.m. We first attended the flag ceremony. After Anderson’s principal speech, Mam Har as our principal also did a speech. Then we were taken to audio visual room, where Mrs. Tan as Anderson’s principal told us about the school. All the students there are called Andersonians. Once she was finished, several Andersonians came to pick us up to study with them. I was in the same class with Gabriella, William H, and
Anderson Secondary School

Jason. Each of us had our own Andersonian partner. My partner was Hui Ying. She used eyeglasses and as tall as me. She was very kind. Gabriella’s partner was Jenna, Jason’s was Luey, and William’s was Marco. We were taken to the same class, 2/3. The first lesson was Mandarin. It was pretty hard that I didn’t even understand what did the teacher say. After Mandarin, the next lesson was Geography. We attended every lesson untill the last one. At 12 p.m, we went to invention room. There were foods outside the room. They said it was our lunch. So we took them and ate inside the room and chatted.

We went back to the hostel to change clothes and took a short break. After we were all ready, we walked to the MRT station and went to Chinatown. We were given free time from 3 to 7 p.m. I bought some stuffs there, such as a charger adaptor because I didn’t have one and I was suffering all night to charge my phone. There was also a Tintin Shop. Last, I went to Fragrance and bought some pork. At 7, we all went back to the hostel.

Chinatown

Day 4 – Tuesday, February 23th 2016

Soccer field. Pretty big, yes?
Oh God! I woke up very late that day. But fortunately, I can still go to school. School was fun as well as yesterday. There was Physical Education. We went to the soccer field which was very big.

Walking to the bus station to get
to Marina Barrage
After school, we took a break in the hostel. Today was our time to go to Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. We took an MRT and a bus. We went to Marina Barrage first. It is a place where sea water distilled into fresh water for daily life. We can’t go into the museum because it was under maintenance. We took so many pictures there. Then we took a walk to Gardens by the Bay. Some of us and also me decided to go to the Skywalk. I went up with Will, Owen, and Myshella. We could see almost whole Singapore from there. When it was getting dark, we watched the light show. The combination between light and sound made up the perfect atmosphere. It was our time to go back to the hostel, but some of us were hungry. So I and some others with Mam Liani went to Ang Mo Kio Hub to find a meal for our dinner, then we went back to our hostel.

Day 5 – Wednesday, February 24th 2016

Eating Breakfast
Based on my yesterday’s experience, I set my alarm at 4.40 a.m. then I took a bath, ate my breakfast and went to school. Today, we were going to Bugis. So when the school end, we went back to the hostel and then we took an MRT to Bugis. We walked around Bugis Junction. I bought a pair of shoes and some clothes there. I also bought a gift for my partner, because tomorrow is the last day of school. At 8 p.m. we went back to the hostel and took a rest.

Day 6 – Thursday, February 25th 2016

It was my last day of school. On the last lesson, I gave my partner a gift that I bought yesterday and thanked her for her kindness & friendliness all these days. I also wrote her a letter. Then we took some pictures together and had our lunch. She had to continue her lesson, so we said goodbye to each other. Fortunately I have already got her Instagram account. So we could stay in touch with each other. We went back to the hostel to change our clothes.
Orchard Road
At 3 p.m, we went to Orchard. We were very happy. This is what we’ve been waiting for since we got to Singapore. We scattered and began to explore the Orchard Road. Me and some of the girls first walked around Ion Mall. It was a great and big mall with branded stores in it. We bought some clothes there and other things. Then we went out from the mall and went to Lucky Center and Takashimaya. We went to Kinokuniya Bookstore there which is very big. It’s probably the biggest bookstore I’ve ever been on my entire whole life. For me and Laurell, who love books so much, it was feel like heaven. We ran into the bookstore and started to choose the books. I bought An Abundance of Katherines by John Green and Laurell bought The Fault in Our Stars by the same author. After that, we went to Somerset Mall to have our dinner there. We went back to Ion Mall which is our assembly point. At 9 p.m, we went back to our hostel.
Tomorrow we will be going back to Indonesia, so I started to pack some of my stuff and charged my electronics. Today was a long day. I was pretty tired so I closed my eyes that night.

Last Day & Arrival – Friday, February 26th 2016

Flying back to Indonesia
The clock in my phone showed it was 7.13 a.m. I took a bath and packed the rest of my stuffs. Then I cleaned my room and put everything back to the way it was. At 7 I locked my room and went downstairs with my suitcase and bags. I took some pictures with my friends while waiting for the bus to pick us up. Finally the bus came. We made our way to Changi International Airport and checked in. We still have some minutes before boarding, so I went to Giordano and Cocoa & Co. Ibought some chocolates and Jelly Belly there. There was an announcement for us to board to the plane, so we came together and do so. I sat next to Caleb and Adriel. The plane started to take off. The flight was felt very fast. At 12 p.m. West Indonesian Time, the plane landed safely in Husein Sastranegara International Airport Bandung, signify the end of our study tour. We took our baggage and came home.
